2008     If You Can See the Past in the Present, Thank an Archaeologist: Getting Serious about Archaeological Literacy. The SAA Archaeological Record, 8(1): 36-39, Society for American Archaeology
This article argues that despite the major advances in public education and outreach, there is still a lack of "archaeological literacy" among the public. The authors describe the 1990s coalition, known as the "Education and Archaeology Work Group," which formed to discuss the need for public outreach and education in archaeology. Following this, there have been discussions and will continue to be discussions about the need for a uniform definition of archaeological literacy. The authors state that there is also a need for continued collaboration between archaeologists and educators, for discussions about what activities are useful for literacy, and for recognition of the different understandings that develop from different educational activities.
